All Mine
This is often the one moment photographers wait for on Skomer. Puffins bringing their catch of eelworms in to feed their young appear startlingly quickly almost under the watchers feet. They pause on landing because this is the moment of most danger. Gulls wheel overhead and dive in straight at these relatively small birds scaring them into dropping their catch. In recent years the number off eelworms has dropped so Puffins have to work far harder to find enough for their chicks: to suddenly find these stolen is bad enough but if they go towards their burrows too quickly the gulls follow them in and take not only the eelworms but also the chicks. Nature is not kind to them. Last time I was on the island I saw so called professional nature photographers almost jumping in glee when a gull did this - it made (according to them) a rare image. For me it just made me feel sick and also sad for the nesting pair who had made so much effort to raise their young
